Some things to know about Fishing in the Smoky Mountains.
Fishing is permitted year-round on open waters in the park. You can fish from 30 minutes before official sunrise to 30 minutes after official sunset. Some small streams are closed to fishing to protect sensitive fish habitat — check maps and ask at a visitor center or ranger station. Only use one hand-held fishing rod and line. Only artificial flies or lures with a single hook are allowed — no natural bait or liquid scent. Double, treble, or gang hooks are prohibited.

What to know about Fishing in the Smoky Mountains at any of our Cabins on Cosby Creek near Gatlinburg.

  • You must have a valid freshwater fishing license issued by either Tennessee or North Carolina to fish anywhere inside the National Park. Licenses from either state are honored throughout the entire park, regardless of which side you’re on.
  • Licenses are not sold inside the park — you must buy them online or in nearby towns before you fish.
  • Age requirements:
    • Tennessee: Anyone age 13 or older needs a license.
    • North Carolina: Anyone age 16 or older needs a license.
    • Younger anglers are still subject to bag limits and other regulations even if they don’t need a license.

Note: Special local permits may be required outside the National Park (for example in Gatlinburg city waters or Cherokee tribal lands). But inside GSMNP, the Tennessee or North Carolina license is all you need
